The Martial Artist Bo Staff

Hickory Jo Staff, Martial Arts training equipment.

Made in USA

Description: Train with the Strength of the Appalachians For the martial artist who requires a training tool that can withstand impact without shattering, there is no substitute for Hickory. Denser and more shock-resistant than Oak, our Hickory Jo staff's are built for rigorous training, forms, and conditioning.

Hand-selected and finished by White Wolf, these staffs offer the perfect balance of weight and speed. They are not mass-produced; they are natural wood staves straightened and finished to preserve the grain's integrity.

Performance Features:

  • High Impact Resistance: Hickory's long fibers allow it to absorb shock, making it the preferred wood for tool handles and impact equipment.

  • Natural Feel: Finished with natural oils that provide a smooth glide in the hand without being slippery.

  • Balanced Weight: Substantial enough to build wrist strength, but balanced for fluid rotation and practice.

  • Versatile Use: Ideal for Bojutsu, Aikido, Kung Fu, or HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts) quarterstaff training.

Specs:

  • Material: Solid Appalachian Hickory.

  • Diameter: Approx. 1 inch (standard martial arts grip).

  • Length: Customizable from 48" or 50" (Jo)

    Handmade Hickory Staffs

    Our Process

    Hand-Selected Appalachian Hickory

    • The Process: We don't just order bulk lumber; we hand-select each piece based on grain straightness and density.

    • The Benefit: This ensures that every Hiking Staff or Bo Staff has no hidden knots or grain run-outs that could cause it to snap under pressure.

    The Superiority of Solid Hickory

    • The Process: Emphasize that your staffs are carved from single, solid pieces of Appalachian Hickory.

    • The Benefit: Mass-produced staffs are often "engineered" (multiple pieces glued together), which creates weak points. A solid Hickory Jo Staff provides the maximum shock absorption and durability required for martial arts or rugged trekking.

    Deliberate, Slow Curing

    • The Process: Contrast your slow curing process with industrial kiln-drying. Industrial kilns "flash dry" wood, which can make it brittle.

    • The Benefit: Slow curing preserves the wood’s natural fibers and flexibility, ensuring your Trekker Staffs can withstand years of heavy use without cracking.

    Custom Hand-Shaping & Finishing

    • The Process: Describe how you hand-taper your Martial Arts Pro Bo Staffs to achieve a perfect balance that machines cannot replicate.

    • The Benefit: This results in a Hickory Bo Staff that feels like an extension of the user, offering better control and comfort during long hikes or intense training sessions.
